Anglin Falls

ANGLIN FALLS AREA IS CLOSED FOR RESTORATION
MORE INFORMATION: https://forestryoutreach.berea.edu/trails/anglin-falls/

Although it's obvious by the eroded rock formation, that water once fell forcefully off Anglin Falls, today weather conditions determine the flow of water coming down from the rocks. Located in John B. Stephenson Memorial Forest, this rich wooded ravine is open to the public for hiking, bird watching and nature studying. It is about a 3/4 mile hike, sometimes steep climbing, from the parking area to the falls.

Directions: Arrive in Berea from I-75, exit 77 (KY 595) or I-75. exit 76 (KY 21) which both lead to Berea College and Boone Tavern. From Boone Tavern, travel south on Scaffold Cane Road (KY 595) until it joins KY 1617 and continue for about 5.0 miles. After reaching the top of a curvy hill, Macedonia Baptist Church and a small store are at the junction of three paved roads, Burnt Ridge Road (left), KY 1617 (right) and KY 1787 (middle). Take the middle fork (KY 1787) and continue south for 2.3 miles until it joins Hammond Fork Road at the junction of Old Disputanta Post Office. Turn left (North) on Hammond Fork Road and travel 0.7-0.8 miles and watch for Anglin Fork Road, the only road on the right. Travel on this road East for 0.8 miles until reaching the Venable mailbox. Turn left and seek a parking place. You have arrived at the entrance to the John. B. Stephenson Memorial Forest.

Great Saltpetre Cave Preserve

The Great Saltpetre Preserve is the home of Great Saltpetre Cave, a historic limestone cave once mined for saltpeter, during the War of 1812. The cave is now normally closed to the public, except for the annual Open House. The remainder of the grounds consist of a natural preserve consisting mostly of pasture and woodlands. The property is managed for historical purposes in an attempt to preserve a part of Kentucky's natural beauty for generations to come. Open Houses are held the weekend after Mother's Day each spring.

Sheltowee Trace

Climbing between deep hemlock gorges and piney, craggy summits, the Sheltowee Trace is a 319-mile National Recreation Trail (2015 alignment) that spans the Daniel Boone National Forest and Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area in Kentucky and Tennessee. The name "Sheltowee" honors the history of Daniel Boone, who was captured by Shawnee Indians while making salt in an area close to the present-day trail. Chief Blackfish, his adopted Shawnee father, renamed him Sheltowee, which meant "Big Turtle."
